Children's Outreach in Malaysia
Children’s Outreach at Agape Presbyterian Church, Malaysia
By Peter Ruck
On a recent trip to Malaysia, my wife, Judy, and I spent the weekend in the historic city of Melaka, with my brother-in-law. On the Sunday morning we were invited to minister at the Children’s Bible club within the Agape Presbyterian Church in Kluang.
We had a fantastic morning of fun and games and Bible action songs, led by a consisting of myself, Judy my wife and Bee Koh, a lady from Peniel Church who was on holiday in her home town nearby. The children who attended the Bible club were a real mix of ages, from different backgrounds, some from church families, and others straight from the street. There was even a group of children from a nearby care home. On top of that, some only spoke Chinese and others only spoke English!
Faith and the Love of God
The theme of my message to the children was “Faith and the Love of God”. I began to share about a real man of faith from the Bible, Noah, and used Peniel Church’s Ark Bible Club DVD production of Noah’s Ark as an icebreaker. The children loved the DVD. They laughed at the puppets, got up to join in with all the action songs, and finally joined with the Lord’s Prayer.
Planting Faith
After showing them the DVD, I continued to share on the theme of faith, using Hebrews 11 v 1: “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see” (New Living Translation). I shared with them the Lord’s Prayer and we planted sunflower seeds in as we’ve done in the past with the Ark Bible Club in Brentwood, and also at a children’s outreach on a recent mission trip to Belarus. I showed the children two clear cups, both filled with soil. I then asked them to believe that I had planted a seed in one of them, even though they couldn’t see it – illustrating the concept of faith.
Water the Seeds
We taught them that they need to water their seed to give it life and that the Word of God is like a seed. As they read the Bible, sing songs and listen to Bible stories, their faith will grow and come to life, just like a plant. The children really responded to what I shared with them, and it was such a blessing to minister the love of Jesus. Children are same the world over and they are so special to God!
We met up with several other ministries over that weekend and during the following week and whenever possible I took the opportunity to show them the Ark Bible Club’s Noah’s Ark DVD. It was very well received, and the DVD will soon be released in the UK.
